This past Tuesday I learned how to not be scared of my sewing machine thanks to an Intro to Sewing course at Bits of Thread here in DC.
It was so momentous that I literally had the following clip from What About Bob? in my head:
I have slugged my grandmother’s old Singer sewing machine to my various apartments for over a decade now, yet been so scared of using it that I had only actually tried it out once or twice. I had literally become a Luddite, as I kept saying things like “it’s too fast” or “I can’t handle all those moving parts” whenever talk of me actually using it came up in conversation, as not only do I have it, but it sits permanently in my living room (it’s built in to a table).
So, I decided to face my crafty fear and go for it. Here are the results:

Ahoy! Now how I know how Bob felt in that clip and feel so triumphant for having mastered my fear of the moving needle!
Curious, do you have any crafty fears? And if so, have you mastered them?
Yeah ! Congratz !
Thanks, Alice! :)
Way to go! One of the best things about crafting is the “OMG I can do this!”feeling.
I used to be scared about anything that included power tools, flames etc. This is often the case for woodwork and metalwork. However, I had to study these subjects at university (I’ve got a bachelors degree on crafts and recreation) and I learned that it wasn’t that scary afterall! Nothing bad happened when everyone followed the safety regulations, so I learned to master my fears!
Thanks, Vivi!
I was super scared of flame-related stuff, too! Then I took a metalsmithing class and am now only *partly* scared of it…. Congrats on conquering YOUR crafty fears, too! High five!
My crafty fear is woollen spinning…I am able to justify worsted drafting for everything…unconquered as yet.
You can do it, Rebecca!!!
Every Summer I took homemaking classes at school, so I wasn’t really afraid to try things. Yet somehow I don’t have the patience for sewing. If something went wrong, it sat on the machine for months before I finally got around to taking it apart and trying again.
Judith, I hope that’s not the case for me… (although I can sure see it being…) but how cool that you took those classes each summer- you became fearless to try new things *and* learned amazing new skills! Awesome!
Oh I know this feeling, many times over! Wood working, baking with sourdough, knitting, crocheting, gardening, making jam. Power to us :)
Kate, great to know that I’m not alone in feeling this! And yes! Power to us, indeed! x
